Every Birdwatchers likes to take time to Sit Down and Read!

Come on into our store and cosy up in one of our Polywood Recycled Plastic Chairs and read one of our newest books added to our always expanding book section.

Sometimes you'll be joined by Skutch or Sayan, our WBU cats, who can be typically found enjoying a nice cat nap. Or other times you might be able to look out the back window at our pole mounted Eliminator birdfeeder which seems to be fairly active with birds these days. So here's an update on a few of our new books.

So come on in, ruffle up your feathers and enjoy reading books shared and read by other birdwatchers like you!

Peterson Field Guides - Finding Your Wings: A Workbook for Beginning Bird Watchers

No other book for beginning bird watchers involves the reader so actively in the exciting first steps of learning to watch birds. This workbook is filled with quizzes and exercises that prepare the reader for going birding and help beginners develop a sense of accomplishment and progress. With each chapter covering a different aspect of bird watching, the author guides readers along a threefold path: learning how to really see birds, how to sort birds by category, and how to learn the easiest birds first. Plenty of room is provided for writing and sketching, and answers are supplied in the back of the book.

Birdwatcher: The Life of Roger Tory Peterson by Elizabeth J. Rosenthal

Roger Tory Peterson—the Renaissance man who taught Americans the joy of watching birds—also invented the modern field guide. His 1934 landmark Field Guide to the Birds was the first book designed to go outdoors and help people identify the elements of nature. This self-proclaimed “student of nature” combined spectacular writing with detailed illustrations to ultimately publish many other books, winning every possible award and medal for natural science, ornithology, and conservation.
Birdwatcher is a comprehensive, illustrated biography of Roger Tory Peterson--a hero in the conservation world--including interviews with friends, family, and protégés.

Birders: Tales of a Tribe by Mark Cocker

Cocker presents a witty, entertaining look at the subculture, lifestyles, adventures, and misadventures of the consuming hobby of birding, as distinguished from the passive, idle pursuit of bird watching. His birders are bright, active, often quirky people who are aggressive, adventurous, and obsessive about their avocation. Written from a British perspective, yet worldwide in focus, Cocker's tales describe the birder's lust for achieving long lists of species seen as well as the never-ending search for rarities. He shows how birders are highly knowledgeable about geography, ecology, and botany, and in many respects their familiarity with birds often surpasses that of professional ornithologists.
